Shabbat Shalom from Rabbi Ain – July 14, 2017

Shabbat Shalom! This week we read from Parashat Pinchas. In this week’s Torah portion, God gives Pinchas a covenant of peace. God explains the apportionment of the Land of Israel. The daughters of Zelophehad petition to inherit their father’s portion. Moses appoints Joshua as his successor.

Friday night services are at 6:15 tonight and Shabbat morning services begin at 9:15 am tomorrow morning. Candle lighting is at 8:08 pm.

There is a Sha-bappy Hour tonight for our Young Professionals community following Friday night services.

Tomorrow we will welcome Rabbi David Levy to the pulpit as he gives the D’var Torah during services.

Thought Question: Why are the holidays mentioned in this week’s parasha? What purpose do they serve, especially now that we are reading them in the three weeks leading up to Tisha B’av?

TISHA B’AV OBSERVANCE
Monday, July 31, 7:30 pm | Tuesday, August 1, 8 am
Tisha B’Av, is a period of lamentation and prayer to remember the destruction of the First and Second Temples of Jerusalem. It is a sad day that observes other major disasters and tragedies that Jewish people experienced throughout history, including the expulsion from England in 1290 and from Spain in 1492, as well as the mass deportation of Jewish people from the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II.
Let’s gather together on Monday evening, July 31st at 7:30 pm in the ballroom of the synagogue for a *pre-fast dinner and program in preparation for the High Holidays. The evening service and the reading of the Book of Lamentations will follow.
Tuesday morning August 1st, Shacharit services will begin at 8:00 am and will include the reading of Lamentations.
*Dinner is complimentary for members – $36 for guests. Reservations are required. Contact: 212-593-3300 or sps@spsnyc.org
